| | Developed in January of 1996, the Young Adult Abuse Prevention Program (YAAPP) of FCS offers interactive theatrical presentations to schools and community groups, with a primary focus on dating violence and bullying. We believe that the violence and injustice that occurs in this world results from the system of oppression that is currently a part of our social culture. Therefore, YAAPP works to uncover all power imbalances by opening up discussions around racism, sexism, heterosexism, classism, adultism, and other systems of oppression.

| | - Youth Educator Program
YAAPP trains high school students to work with us as youth educators. After a 30-hour training, they meet regularly for continuing support, education and creative process. The youth educators are volunteers who were recruited through our high school presentations. Youth educators use theater as a means for social change by presenting in Middle Schools, conferences and faculty/staff trainings.
- High School Presentations
The High School presentations consists of "The Jake and Caroline Skit," in which our female and male presenters act out a relationship in which the boyfriend is emotionally, sexually and physically abusive. After the skit, the presenters process the scenes with the audience, covering warning signs, the dynamics of power and control, how to intervene, safety planning, and resources. Also the presenters run an activity to uncover sex role stereotypes that help to perpetuate dating violence.
- Middle School Presentations
These presentations are designed to show students how they can create a school climate in which every student feels respected. We do this through interactive theater, brainstorms and activities. The activities are designed to celebrate diversity and to build comfort among peers. The brainstorms give the students a chance to voice their opinions on what people get picked on for, how victims feel, and what makes a good friend or ally. The interactive theater is designed for students to model their "peer power" to prevent bullying and harassment from happening in their school. The Youth Educators, along with YAAPP staff, facilitate. After YAAPP has presented the above program to a Middle School, YAAPP offers grade specific presentations on dating violence and other related topics for the following year or semester.
- Faculty/Staff Trainings
These trainings are designed to educate faculty/staff on the dynamics of dating violence and/or bullying. We do this by looking at the current social structure that creates power imbalances based upon social groups in which we belong. It is designed to provide faculty/staff with information on how to intervene in abusive behavior, what community resources are available, and how to create a non-oppressive school environment. The Youth Educators are often part of this presentation so that the faculty/staff are informed from a student's perspective.
- Other Presentations
YAAPP also offers Community Presentations, Parent Presentations, and Conference Workshops on dating violence, bullying, adultism and/or systems of oppression.
Our program is constantly growing and changing, so if your venue needs are not represented here, please call anyway to find out if we can be of assistance to you.
